Last week I was asked kindly to write for the great people over at Boobs, Bacon, Bourbon about how to date a bartender. Many of you may have read it, but if not then I suggest you do so before continuing here. You may be able to tell that not everything in part one of this manifesto is entirely real… AKA I open a few doors that are filled with stereotypes there. I have therefore decided to touch more on reality with part two. What I mean by it is much more basic and obvious. We industry folk work the opposite hours as most corporate drones… er… people with day jobs. I work days each week depending on the season, but I am rarely at work before 4pm. You need to be ready to accommodate last-minute plans.
Dating do’s and don’ts — wisdom from Seattle bartenders
And whatever you do, don’t treat the date like an interview. Covering the happy-hour scene for The Seattle Times, nearly every week I see several first dates unfold — a lot of them awkward. It just sends a negative message. Enjoy your drinks with a little sensibility while allowing the booze … to take the edge off your anxiety or inhibition. Vermouth, Sherry, bubbles. Long drinks especially are a good choice: collins, fizzes, bucks, Amari and soda — anything with relatively low alcohol.
The bartenders all know you’re on a Tinder date not just because of in case that other guy you’ve been hanging out with texts you mid-date.
The minute a man steps foot behind that booze-infested fence, they immediately become attractive. There are many, many attractive qualities and benefits that make my insides melt. They have to be attractive, witty, confident, and know their way around a fully-stocked bar. Say it with me: swooooooooooooon. Dating a bartender has its upsides for sure. But for every great date, there are at least a handful of train wrecks. So who better to ask about the ingredients of a good date than the bartender himself? One of the biggest train wreck first dates I ever saw was a man in his late thirties and a girl in her early twenties. This deal is worth a million dollars! So her exit strategy was totally a fake phone call situation. Personally I would go for the drink that I can sip on like a Sazerac with rye.
Being the lives of the party and the keepers of the alcohol make bartenders inherently appealing. But bartenders can also be a challenging group to date. From unsociable hours to jealousy issues, here are seven reasons you should never date a bartender. Unless you work a similar schedule, the bartender work schedule can be tough to accommodate.
Their schedule often changes by week or season. And forget making weekend plans. One workaround for the aforementioned schedule situation is that you can visit them at their job. Another potential consequence of dating a bartender is that when you break up, you may feel uncomfortable going back to the bar where they work. Depending on how long you dated, you can usually resume bar visits once there has been an adequate grace period. This situation can work, but it will challenge your jealousy gene.
Because we expend most of our social energy at work, bartenders often need quiet time on our days off. They often expect you to be the fun-loving, energetic bartender personality that they first met, and it can be disappointing when your off-duty vibe is much different. Most bartenders are either completely sober or total drinkers with not much in-between.
